Monday, 22. September 2025
Phil Ivey has been labeled as the best poker competitor on the planet by quite a few of the top pros. Phil was born in Riverside, CA and moved to New Jersey before his first birthday. His grandpa showed him to penny-ante Five-Card Stud poker. From then on on, Phil was addicted to poker and wished to pickup every little thing he could about the game. He would tell his elders that he wanted to be a professional poker player. Phil did not permit the adverse comments from other people kill his goal of being one of the greatest poker competitors on the planet.
Phil started playing seriously after acquiring a false ID by the name of Jerome. He honed his techniques at the casinos in Atlantic City. The first number of years for him were a learning experience and coming away with a win wasn’t a normal outcome at the time. Phil became known at the 2000 WSOP where he achieved two final tables and came away with his first WSOP bracelet, in a two dollar, 500 Pot-Limit Omaha game. At the final table he defeated a number of the better known pros including but not limited to "Amarillo Slim" Preston, David "Devilfish" Ulliot, and Phil Hellmuth, Jr.
He decided to take his skills to the next level and headed out west to Vegas. Phil continues to compete in in "The Big Game" at the Bellagio with the best players on the planet. Ivey credits his success to discipline and an undying love for poker. He says that he is picking up skills every single day and is incredibly humble about his achievements. He knows he makes blunders in each game of poker and constantly strives to get better.
Although Phil has come first in some large tournaments, he prefers winning cash games on a regular basis.
