Phil Ivey has been branded as the number one poker player in the world by many of the top-ranked professionals. He was born in Riverside, CA and moved to Jersey before reaching turning one. His grandfather introduced him to one cent-ante 5-Card Stud poker. From that point on, Phil was hooked on poker and wished to learn whatever he could about poker. Phil routinely would tell his elders that he wanted to be a professional poker player. He did not allow the detrimental feedback from others annihilate his goal of being one of the strongest poker competitors in the world.

He started competing seriously after acquiring a false ID by the name of Jerome. He sharpened his abilities at the poker rooms of Atlantic City. The beginning number of years for him were a teaching opportunity and winning wasn’t a regular thing at the time. Phil became known at the 2000 World Series of Poker when he made 2 final tables and came away with his 1st World Series of Poker bracelet, in a $2, five hundred Pot-Limit Omaha event. At the final table he defeated many of the well known professionals including but not limited to "Amarillo Slim" Preston, David "Devilfish" Ulliot, and Phil Hellmuth, Jr.

Phil made a decision to take his skills to the next level and headed out west to Las Vegas. He continues to compete in in "The Big Game" at the Bellagio with the best players in the world. Ivey credits his achievements to discipline and an eternal passion for poker. He says that he is picking up skills every day and is quite humble about his achievements. He admits to making errors in each session of poker and always strives to improve.

Although Ivey has won some big-time tournaments, he favors destroying money games on a regular basis.
